KSDK -- Usually it's the employer paying the employee, but on Wednesday a father and son military pair found a way to repay their boss.

Carl Lipa nominated Susan Burkhardt for the United States Department of Defense's Patriot Award. Lipa serves in the National Guard and has worked for Neumayer Equipment Company in St. Louis since 2003. The Neumayer Equipment Company sells petroleum automotive industrial equipment and supplies.

Lipa's son, Joshua, also worked for Neumayer for two years before being deployed to Iraq in 2006 with the National Guard.

The Patriot Award goes to companies who go above and beyond to work with members of the National Guard. For Burkhardt, the mission is personal.

"I just want to say both my grandparents, my grandfather served in World War II, my father was in the Marine reserves, and he just passed on, and I'm following his wishes by supporting Carl and his family and their reserve career," Burkhardt said.

The Department of Defense says less than one percent of all employers manage to qualify for a Patriot Award.
