KSDK -- St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and Congressman Lacy Clay are speaking out regarding Mark McGwire's admission to using steroids when he set the single-season home run record in 1998.
Mayor Slay said he is "disappointed" that former Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire used steroids during his time with the club, according to a statement from the Mayor's office.
Here is Slay's statement:
"I am disappointed that Mark McGwire used steroids in the 1990s. I am glad he has finally admitted it. I am delighted he will be working with the Cardinals this season. I didn't put his name on the highway and it is not to up to me to take it off."
Congressman Lacy Clay had this to say:
"I spoke with Cardinals management today and they briefed me on Mark McGwire's admission. I'm glad he finally told the truth and has taken personal responsibility for his mistakes. He owes that to the Cardinals and to baseball fans everywhere. From my perspective, the issue is now closed and we move on. I wish him well in his return to the dugout as the Cardinals' new batting coach."
