KSDK -- A teacher at Hazelwood East High School has been suspended after allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student. Word spread quickly among students.
"I couldn't even say it. I was shocked, I was real shocked; I couldn't say nothing," said sophomore Brian Young. "It was just crazy."
The St. Louis County Police Department said the report was made about a week ago by a third party. They still consider this an open investigation, with no arrests made thus far.
"I guess there were rumors between the senior class, but I didn't think it would flow down, get around the whole school until the letters came out," said student Antione Cole.
A letter from Principal Mark Martin went home with each student.
It reads in part: "Allegations of inappropriate relations with a student have been made regarding a teacher at Hazelwood East High School. This is a personnel issue and the teacher has been suspended while these allegations are being investigated."
Students said the teacher in question is well-liked.
"He's cool. I mean he's a cool guy. He talks a lot, he's not anti-social," Young said. "He talks back to us, says hi to us in the hallway and all that."
As for parents, they're glad the school has taken action while the allegations are sorted out.
"It's unbelievable. I mean, in this day and age, and with everything that's going on, you would think that teachers and students too would make better choices, better decisions because they know what the consequences will be," said Candice Young.
Here is the text of the letter sent home with each student:
