CARBONDALE, IL (AP) -- The prospect that wind may someday provide Southern Illinois University's flagship Carbondale campus with some of its electricity is inching ahead.
SIU spokesman Rod Sievers says the university's governing board on Thursday signed off on a plan to study the economic feasibility of putting a wind turbine on the campus. The study also will help pinpoint cost estimates and possible funding sources.
The debate comes at a time when university administrators say annual electricity costs for the campus have risen nearly $3 million over the past five years.
A final proposal on the wind turbine project will be presented to the board for consideration later.
