KSDK -- An Illinois state trooper charged in a fatal wreck in 2007 has been granted a continuance in a wrongful-death suit filed against him.
The attorney for State Trooper Matt Mitchell said no state law or police policy was on record to bar his client from driving more than 100 miles per hour on I-64 while trying to get to an accident scene.
Mitchell's patrol car eventually veered over the median and collided with a car occupied by sisters Jessica and Kelli Uhl. Both girls died at the scene.
The lawyer representing the Uhl family said Mitchell was distracted with e-mail and his cell phone while driving and that he could not hear radio transmissions informing him that the accident scene he was under control.
