KSDK -- The man accused of killing two Collinsville sisters is no longer an Illinois State Police trooper.
Matt Mitchell resigned from the force in April, just a few days after he pleaded guilty to reckless homicide charges.
On November 23, 2007, then-Trooper Mitchell was responding to an accident call when he crossed the median on Interstate 64 and collided with another vehicle, killing 18-year-old Jessica Uhl and 13-year-old Kelli Uhl. Court documents revealed Mitchell was driving at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour prior to the accident. It was Mitchell's third accident as a state trooper.
Mitchell admitted responsibility for causing the high-speed crash, pleading guilty to two counts of reckless homicide and two more counts of aggravated reckless driving, and was sentenced to 30 months probation for his plea. He will serve no jail time.
In the meantime, the Uhl family has filed a $46 million wrongful death suit against Mitchell and the Illinois State Police.
