KSDK -- Five members of the Kirkwood community were honored for their devoted service.. including three who stepped forward to make a difference following the city's greatest tragedy.

Kirkwood Baptist Church awarded its Hands on Community Awards Tuesday night.  The church says the awards go to people who show "exemplary service toward the healing and health of the city".

The five included Kirkwood Police Chief Jack Plummer, Chair for the Community for Understanding and Hope Ron Hodges, Kirkwood Baptist Church member Louise Duke and CFUH steering committee members Bill and Margaret Bommarito.

The Community for Understanding and Hope was initiated by the Meacham Park Neighborhood Improvement Association following the February 7, 2008 shootings at Kirkwood City Hall.  Its mission is to create a dialogue between people of all races and religions to foster understanding and a better community.
