POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) - Authorities say a 68-year-old man drowned in southeast Missouri's Wappapello Lake after jumping into the water to see if it was shallow enough for his granddaughter.
The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports that Richard Hendrickson of Poplar Bluff was pronounced dead at a hospital later Sunday.
The Missouri State Water Patrol says Hendrickson jumped from his anchored pontoon boat to test the water's depth for his granddaughter, only to find the water over his head.
A patrolman for the state agency says he was told Hendrickson couldn't swim.
The patrol says Hendrickson resurfaced, shouted for help and disappeared again below the water before his wife managed to pull him to the boat. Other boaters helped get him out of the water.
