University City (KSDK) -- A University City congregation is trying to reach the community through art.
At the request of the First Presbyterian Church on Delmar, artist Charlie Brouwer is building a sculpture on the church lawn.
Thirty years ago Brouwer began making art with ladders. He says he finds similarities between a row of rungs and people at their best.
Using ladders on loan from people in the community, Brouwer hopes his art work will come to symbolize a community that is strengthened by working together - the antithesis, he says, of the plans by a Florida church pastor to burn the Quran on the same day his installation is to be completed.

Both are scheduled for the 9th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
"Individually these ladders are individual hopes and dreams. But if we tie them all together then they're linked to the community and we get this image of being able to create something bigger and maybe better and higher, metaphorically, by being held together tight and supporting each other," says Brouwer.
Ladders can be dropped off on loan from 4pm to 6pm on Thursday and Friday or during the day on Saturday September 11th.
