ST. LOUIS (AP) - A lawsuit claims the website backpage.com aided in child prostitution by providing a place for a pimp to advertise a 14-year-old St. Louis girl for sex.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court. It seeks at least $150,000 in damages under the Child Abuse Victims Rights Act.
The attorney for the girl, Robert Pedroli, says she was a runaway in 2009 and met a woman who persuaded her to become a prostitute. That woman paid to advertise the girl for sex on backpage.com, according to the lawsuit.
The suit claims backpage.com knew that prostitution was being facilitated through the website.
A message seeking comment from Phoenix-based Village Voice Media, which owns backpage.com, was not returned.
