St. Louis, MO (KSDK) -- A 37-year-old inmate died Friday morning while in custody at the St. Louis City Justice Center.
According to Katie O'Sullivan, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the inmate, Vanessa Evans, was in a single cell at the Justice Center when she began experiencing breathing problems Thursday and received treatment.
Early Friday morning, O'Sullivan said Evans asked to be let out of her cell to get some air. She was allowed to walk around just outside of her cell and eventually returned. A Justice Center employee was making the rounds a short time later and discovered Evans lying on the floor of her cell, unresponsive. The Justice Center employee immediately began administering CPR and requested assistance.
Evans was rushed to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, O'Sullivan said. There were no apparent signs of trauma to Evans' body.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
