CNN -- US Senator Roland Burris of Illinois is considering running for mayor of Chicago.

A group of Burris supporters filed the nomination paperwork needed to enter him into the contest.

Burris is leaving Capitol Hill in January, after filling the final two years in the Senate seat vacated by President Obama.

If Burris decides to run, he'll join a crowded field of candidates vying to succeed retiring Mayor Richard Daley.

Among the candidates: former Senator Carol Moseley Braun and President Obama's former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel.
