St. Louis (KSDK) -- According to the US Census, St. Louis ranks second among America's major cities for housing vacancies.

The city's rate is 19.4 percent, second to New Orleans at 21.5 percent.  81 US cities with at least 100,000 homes are included in the list.  Detroit, Cincinnati and Baltimore also have high vacancies.

The Census also showed St. Louis' housing is some of the oldest, with more than 80 percent of the houses more than a half-century old.

The statistics were provided by the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.  The Census circulated three million questionnaires from January 2005 to December 2009 to acquire the data.
