St. Charles, MO (KSDK) -- It's an issue before the U.S. Supreme Court. Now, a controversial church group known for protesting at military funerals is coming to St. Charles to fight for its first amendment rights.
St. Charles County is currently involved in a legal battle over a law limiting protests outside funerals.
One city council member tried to get a similar law passed on Tuesday. That vote was postponed, but the Westboro Baptist Church protestors still plan to be here on Thursday.
A spokesman for the church spoke by phone with NewsChannel 5 and said these laws are not accomplishing anything and says the city and county will be sued.
The county goes to court over this issue on January 18. That's the same date the city will meet again to consider a vote on the measure.
