BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A workers' compensation claim by a former Illinois state trooper involved in a 2007 high-speed crash that killed two teenage sisters in southwestern Illinois has been denied.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that an Illinois workers' compensation arbitrator rejected Matt Mitchell's claim for benefits. An arbitrator's opinion obtained by the newspaper said Mitchell's injuries didn't arise "out of and in the course of his employment with the (state)."

Either side may ask a panel of three commissioners to review the decision.

Authorities say Mitchell was traveling 126 mph on Interstate 64 in November 2007 when his police cruiser crossed the median and hit the oncoming car of sisters Kelli and Jessica Uhl of Collinsville. The girls died.

Mitchell pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless homicide and received probation.
