East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks.
East St. Louis (KSDK) - The mayor of East St. Louis has written an open letter to Senator Dick Durbin in response to his request to have bars and liquor stores close earlier.
Mayor Alvin Parks says he will not alter the hours bars and liquor stores are allowed to operate because most of the violent crime in East St. Louis is rarely at these establishments.
Additionally the city will collect almost $140,000 in liquor license fees this year, and closing early would lead to at least ten businesses closing, and negatively affect another seven. This would lead to a greater number of unemployed people in the area, pushing more people into poverty.
Mayor Parks says there are four key issues that lead to violent crime in the area: illegal drug trafficking, guns in the wrong hands, domestic issues, and vendettas that are acted upon.
