Fenton, MO (KSDK)- An 8-year-old girl with big dreams is fighting for her life. Through her struggle, the cancer patient is learning valuable lessons of human kindness.
In June, Kyra Root was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, which is a cancerous bone tumor.
"She had been complaining about leg pain for quite some time everybody kept dismissing it, that it was growing pains. I just felt like something was very wrong," said Karon Root, Kyra's mother.
Doctors at St. Louis Children's Hospital found a tumor in her right femur. They said amputating her leg was the safest option.
As the cancer spread, Kyra's parents learned their daughter has a 30 percent chance of surviving.
"Losing my children is not an option and I will not give into that," said Karen.
But the challenges kept coming.
"We couldn't take Kyra back to our home because we had mold issues at the house we were staying at so we were kind of displaced," said Karen.
With nowhere to go, the Bazow family of Fenton stepped in. The two families were complete strangers with a church connection.
"To know that they didn't have a place to go and yet we had a place where they could, we couldn't do anything but offer it to them. It has been family from the moment they walked in the doors," said Warrine Bazow.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation also stepped in to help Kyra by granting her wish of going to Disney World.
"My wishes are to be a princess for the day, go to Disney World, and have a good time," said Kyra.
"It seems like a small piece of heaven that they are giving us, peace of mind, a couple of days without worry," said Karon.
Despite all she is going through. Kyra focuses on the positive. She says it's not her time especially with all she plans to accomplish.
"My wishes for the future is to be a doctor and an artist because art is my favorite thing and I want to help kids get better," said Kyra.
Kyra leaves for Disney World as soon as she is done with her current round of chemo.
