St. Louis (KSDK) -- This Saturday, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri will go door to door leaving bags they hope you'll fill with personal care items.  NewsChannel 5 viewer Judy Finck wanted to know where the items collected during The April Showers drive end up.  NewsChannel 5's found out the answer in this week's Hey Heidi segment.

After the items are picked up, they end up at Operation Food Search.

You see, it's a place with food in it's name, but the truth is this not-for-profit feeds more than empty stomachs.

"Exactly and these personal care items are so important for person's sense of well-being," explains Executive Director of Operation Food Search Sunny Schaefer.

Since 1998, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri have been slipping on their rain boots and under umbrellas to lend a helping hand.

"It's not fun to walk door to door, says Jade Pierce, a Girl Scout.

They help whether they like it or not or whether or not they know exactly what they're collecting.

"Food and bananas," says Brooklyn Pierce, a Daisy.

For the record, they're asking for toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant and other personal care items and once it's collected it's dropped off at Operation Food Search and then Girl Scouts sort the items.

The items eventually end up at emergency food pantries and shelters throughout the area.

"At least 300 food pantries and other agencies receive these personal care items," adds Schaefer.

And if you think about it that way, all of that walking door to door was more than worth it.

You'll also see Girl Scouts at every Wal-Mart in eastern Missouri collecting items.  Not only are they doing a good thing, they're also trying to break a world record by collecting more personal care items than have been collected ever before.
