Freeburg, IL (KSDK) - Two police officers in Freeburg Illinois are on paid administrative leave. The matter is now under investigation by authorities in St. Clair County.
Sources tell NewsChannel 5 the allegations involve questionable behavior, caught on hidden camera.
The information has now been given to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department to investigate. The States Attorney will then determine whether it rises to the level of a crime.
The Mayor of Freeburg says that could take several more days.
"It's being handled through channels that should give a fair, comprehensive review to all interested parties, the officers themselves and the village of Freeburg," said Mayor Ray Danford.
Meanwhile this would have left the small department severely short-staffed.
And so they've hired three part time officers to cover the gaps.
"That is of concern. So rather than running short or having an officer manning single on a shift which we consider a safety hazard, we have brought in extra temporary help to fill in the spots as necessary," said Danford.
Authorities hope to have the investigation completed by the end of this week.
