Belleville, IL (KSDK) - A 25-year-old Cahokia man pleaded guilty but mentally ill for the 2009 murder of a Centreville police officer, the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office said Friday.

Lt. Gregory Jonas was killed June 2 following a confrontation outside Ernest Smith Apartments near 47th Street and Piggott Avenue. The 59-year-old officer was shot through the back of the head and left to die, lying next to his police cruiser.

Police arrested 25-year-old Lemuel Houston and charged him with first-degree murder.

By pleading "guilty but mentally ill," Houston says at the time of the incident was suffering from a mental illness, but was not legally insane and thus not relieved of criminal responsibility.

Lemuel Houston will be sentenced on August 30, 2012. Prosecutors are pushing for Houston to be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
