St. Louis (KSDK) - A new sterilization unit opened at the John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis Monday morning.
"With the new technology we are able to clean and sterilize very fine instruments but also clean and sterilize the scopes that are used very frequently today now in many of our procedures," said RimaAnn Nelson, RN.
The new equipment and technology will help prevent future problems.
The hospital briefly suspended surgeries in 2010 because of sterilization concerns.
Earlier that year they warned 1,800 veterans that they may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV because of improperly cleaned dental equipment.
Since then, the VA says it's taken several steps to correct the problems.
Congressmen Russ Carnahan and Lacy Clay attended the ceremony. The two are in a heated race in the newly redrawn 1st Congressional District.
