St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A 53-year-old St. Louis County lawyer was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for embezzling nearly half a million dollars from his clients, U.S. Richard Callahan said.
According to court documents, between 2007 and 2011, Jonathan McKee worked at a local law practice, serving as a legal representative for people who were injured or had claims based on contract or negligence where he'd enter into a contingent fee arrangement.
As part of those arrangements, McKee would receive a certain percentage of any successful settlement.
When McKee did prevail on behalf of his clients, the insurance company would mail a check to McKee, payable to his client and him. Rather than deposit his client's share of the settlement, McKee would deposit the entire amount into his own accounts.
McKee pleaded guilty in March to one felony count of mail fraud.
