St. Louis (KSDK) - A 36-year-old St. Louis man has been sentenced to 235 months in prison for shooting a police officer.

Court documents state on March 1, 2011 police were called to a home in the 5200 block of St. Louis Avenue for a report of a prowler.

When officers arrived a victim was found covered in blood.

Vernon Collins, the suspected prowler, was spotted by an officer, and ignored the officer's commands to stop.

When the officer tackled Collins, he resisted attempts to be handcuffed and tried to reach for the officer's gun.

Collins then said, "I have your gun," and shortly thereafter shot the officer, who was grazed in the stomach.

Collins was found hiding in bushes with the officer's weapon in his pants.

He pleaded guilty in May 2012 to one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
