Lincoln County Mo (KSDK) -- Lockdowns at two Troy high schools are over and a suspect has been taken into custody.

Troy police said Troy-Buchanan and New Horizon high schools were briefly locked down around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The lockdowns were prompted because of a threat against Troy-Buchanan High School, which named specific students.

The Lincoln County Sheriff was notified and quickly took a person into custody.  The lockdown was then lifted.

Additional information about the threat and who was taken into custody has not been released.

"It gives me chills just to even think about it," said mother Cindy Stanek about what might have been. "I'm just thankful that the girlfriend said something to somebody to maybe help save a lot of people's lives."

Stanek is a mother of a senior at Troy-Buchanan and she says she found out about the lockdown later in the day. For about 20 minutes both Troy-Buchanan High School and New Horizons School were locked up, no one gets in and no one gets out.

"When they advise a lockdown, we don't ask questions we just lock down," said school spokesperson April Bryant who says even school officials weren't exactly sure why they were locking down. "I'm just glad that we were able to resolve the matter and law enforcement acted so promptly."

The effort came after a female student told a school resource officer that her boyfriend, also a student, had made threats to kill his family, then go to Troy-Buchanan High School and open fire. The girlfriend told the officer her boyfriend showed her three loaded handguns and an assault rifle and told her names of students he wanted to shoot.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office contacted the school district and told them to lock their doors.

"They just made an announcement for all the teachers to tell their classrooms and they said it wasn't a big deal," said Caitlin Stanek.

She admits she was a little nervous at the time, but especially now because she knows why they went on lockdown.

"Now that you've heard about it, it is scary to think about that it could've happened here, and something that tragic could have happened to us," she said.

Bryant says all of the schools were put on lockdown, but only the two high schools remained on lock down for about 20 minutes.
