St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is launching the city's first animal cruelty task force to both raise awareness and increase convictions, and hopefully deter future animal abuse.

Mayor Slay, Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim, St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce were on hand Tuesday to announce the formation of the animal cruelty task force.

The mission of the task force will be to not raise awareness, but to rigorously enforce existing animal abuse and neglect laws and city ordinances, as well as enlisting those who see abuse to report it to authorities.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will dedicate a full-time officer to animal abuse cases to ensure they are handled quickly.

St. Louis Municipal Courts will have a special docket made to cover to animal cruelty cases.

Stray Rescue is creating a class for judges to use during sentencing to educate those found guilty in municipal court.
