(The Chirp) -- RHP Kyle Lohse gained his first postseason win in his fifth postseason start and 10th postseason game. Lohse got down early, giving up a two-run homer in the second to Atlanta C David Ross, but blanked the Braves the rest of the way in a 5 2/3-inning stint in the wild-card game on Friday.
C Yadier Molina deftly fielded a bottle thrown his way during the Turner Field crowd's reaction to an infield fly rule call that went against the Braves in the eighth inning. "It was scary at first," Molina said. "I've never seen that before."
SS Pete Kozma, the only Cardinals starter on Friday who never had been in a postseason game, had a murky postseason debut. Kozma bobbled a double-play grounder, turning it into a forceout, and he also failed to catch the popup that triggered the infield fly rule called by left-field umpire Sam Holbrook. In addition, Kozman went hitless. Kozma, apparently feeling left fielder Matt Holliday's presence, said, "I was under it," he said. "I should have made the play. I took my eyes off it. I was camped under it."
LF Matt Holliday's solo homer in the sixth inning was his eighth in just 31 postseason games. Holliday, who had been bothered by a sore lower back late in the season, swung the bat with authority on Friday -- he also had a single and hit another ball hard.
The Cardinals had difficulty advancing runners late in the season, but C Yadier Molina drove in a run with a groundout, 3B David Freese knocked one in with a sacrifice fly and 2B Daniel Descalso sacrificed to move a runner into scoring position in the seventh inning. The Braves, meanwhile, made three errors and could have been assessed a few others. "We put heat on them," manager Mike Matheny said. "Our guys were aggressive."
RHP Jason Motte gained a four-out save, striking out CF Michael Bourn to strand the bases loaded in the eighth and getting 2B Dan Uggla to ground out with two men on in the ninth.
1B Allen Craig continued his postseason hitting success. A star in last year's World Series run, Craig doubled in a run. That gave him nine RBI on just 10 postseason hits.
OF Adron Chambers, INF Bryan Anderson and INF Ryan Jackson all were added to the Cardinals'25-man roster for the wild-card game. Three starting pitchers -- RHPs Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter and LHP Jaime Garcia -- were left off the roster.
