St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - 2012 Olympic silver medalist Dawn Harper and St. Louis Rams Pro Bowl safety Quintin Mikell visited a north St. Louis high school as ambassadors of a United Way program to promote the importance of education and mentoring in the region.
The 600-member student body at Soldan International Studies High School held a pep rally Tuesday morning for Harper and Mikell, featuring the cheerleading squad and marching band. The two addressed the crowded auditorium about the United Way's Education Express program, followed by Dr. Kelvin Adams, Superintendent of the St. Louis Public School District.
After the rally, back packs with school supplies donated by local companies and organizations were distributed to the students. Dawn Harper and Quintin Mikell then conducted a Q&A session with a classroom of students.
The United Way is using this Education Express initiative to recruit mentors, homework aids and tutors throughout the region, with a goal of recruiting 2,000 volunteers by 2014.
