St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A man escaped injury late Wednesday, but left his sport utility vehicle in ruins following a series of events in north St. Louis.

Police responded to an accident reported near the intersection of St. Louis Avenue and Newstead around 11:15 p.m.

That's where the unidentified driver of the SUV lost control while headed westbound on St. Louis Avenue, struck and sheared a fire hydrant off, then crashed into the corner of the p and A Furniture Showroom in the 4300 block of St. Louis.

The vehicle was destroyed in the crash, and the building sustained significant damage to one corner.

A city building inspector is evaluating whether the structural integrity of the building was compromised by the impact of the vehicle that struck it.
