Collinsville, IL (KSDK) - A vote by the Illinois Senate Thursday passed a resolution for the modernization of the Ameren Illinois Electricity distribution grid.
Ameren Illinois says the upgrade will improve reliability and create hundreds of jobs in the area.
The Illinois Commerce Commission must follow guidelines set by the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act, approved in 2011 by the Illinois General Assembly.
"The rationale behind the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act was simple," said Ameren Illinois President and CEO Richard Mark, during a Senate hearing to support the resolution. "Utilities like Ameren Illinois would have the financial certainty to move forward with much-needed enhancements to the state's electric grid under a performance-based formula rate mechanism."
Last year, Ameren Illinois started its 10 year Modernization Action Plan which includes replacing and refurbishing underground cables, planning for new technology to be installed which will detect outages and restore services, constructing a new training center, and hiring 450 new employees.
