Hazelwood, MO (KSDK) - A 24-year-old mother could face involuntary manslaughter charges after her nine-month-old son died after being left unattended in a bathtub, the Hazelwood Police Department said Monday.
According to Hazelwood police, officers and emergency responders were dispatched to the Extended Stay America Hotel in the 6000 block of N. Lindbergh Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. because of an unresponsive child. Officers and ambulance personnel found a nine-month-old boy on the floor of the room with his mother administering CPR.
The infant was rushed to DePaul Hospital's emergency room and pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m.
Police said investigators determined the child's mom was attempting to bath the boy in the tub and left the room as the child lay in the tub with the water running. The mother said she became distracted and left the bathroom for a short period of time. When she realized what she'd done, the mother said she went back to the bathroom and discovered her son in a tub full of water and not breathing. She pulled her son out of the tub and gave him CPR while dialing 911.
The child's mother remains in the custody of the Hazelwood Police Department pending further investigation.
