Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones poured in a game-high 25 points and
dished out six assists to lead the Iona Gaels as they outlasted the Georgia
Bulldogs to pick up an 81-78 overtime victory at Stegeman Coliseum.
Sean Armand added 18 points and seven rebounds for Iona (4-4) as it snapped a
two-game losing slide. A.J. English chipped in 17 points while Tavon Sledge
scored 10 points and handed out five assists.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope registered a double-double with 18 points and 10
rebounds for Georgia (2-7), which suffered its third consecutive defeat.
Charles Mann also netted 18 points and Brandon Morris scored 12 points. Donte'
Williams also notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
Iona jumped out to a 23-11 lead just over eight minutes after tip-off, but the
Bulldogs rallied back and Caldwell-Pope drained a three-pointer at the buzzer
to give the hosts a 36-35 advantage heading into halftime. Georgia outscored
the Gaels, 18-6, in the paint in the opening 20 minutes. Iona stayed close by
scoring 12 points off of turnovers before the break.
Georgia took control in the early stages of the second half by scoring 11
unanswered points to take 48-41 edge on the scoreboard. Iona responded with a
15-2 run which put it up 56-50 with 9:41 left to play. The Bulldogs fought
back and led by three points before Armand evened the score at 66 with a
three-pointer with just under a minute left in regulation. Neither side
managed to score the rest of the way, which sent the contest into an extra
Iona connected on 5-of-8 attempts from the field including 2-of-3 from three-
point range to stay in front for the majority of the overtime period. Georgia
made 3-of-4 field goal attempts, but went 6-of-15 at the charity stripe in
overtime. Armand made a pair of free throws with two seconds left to put the
Gaels up 81-78 and the Bulldogs were unable to tie it up.
Despite the loss, Georgia outscored the Gaels in the paint, 42-22, and held a
48-26 edge in the rebounding battle. The Bulldogs went 20-of-37 at the free
throw line and 4-of-12 from three-point range while Iona knocked down 11-of-16
at the charity stripe and 12-of-36 attempts from distance.
