Three police officers have been injured -- one in serious condition -- after gunfire erupted early Friday at a New Jersey police headquarters.

WPVI-TV reported that the gunman, a prisoner at the Gloucester Township station, was shot and killed. Two of the officers were being treated for bullet graze wounds, WPVI reported.

Philadelphia's Fox29 news also reported that the suspected was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire possibly in a stairwell at the rear of the police station.

The circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire were not immediately clear.

"Everybody was running up the side here," Sharon Lehner, a nurse who lives next door to the (Cherry Hill, N.J.) Courier-Post newspaper. "I saw a paramedic unit and an ambulance come down. I saw a lot of quick action in the ambulance with officers getting into the ambulance and then leaving."

Gloucester Township, which has a population of about 64,000 people, is located about 15 miles southeast of Philadelphia.
