ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - It's been a long wait, but finally, a new movie theater is opening in downtown St. Louis.
NewsChannel 5's Dana Dean was given access inside MX Movies for a sneak peek.
There was a movie theatre inside of Union Station, but it closed about 10 years ago. The owner of MX Movies says this one will be different. He calls it a luxury theatre. The theater has red leather seats, and a tablet computer for every two chairs, which I'll explain in a minute.
The theater is located at 7th Street and Washington Avenue inside of the new $250,000,000 Mercantile Exchange development, or MX for short. Those behind the development believe it's transformational for downtown St. Louis. A hotel, apartments, four restaurants, and a retail store are open in the MX District so far.
On Thursday MX Movies opens for a VIP event. It's open to the public on Friday.
There are three screens, but perhaps the most interesting part about the theatre is that there's a tablet computer between every two seats that allows you to order food. A server will bring your order right to you. And this isn't just popcorn and candy, listen to what the James Beard nominated chef has in store.
Josh Galliano, Chef de Cinema, said, "We're doing a Midwestern take on poutine. It's a classic Quebec dish of gravy, cheese curds, and fries. The other one we're really proud about is our scallop dish. So, twice-cooked scallop. First, we olive oil poach scallops and then we sear them. Sandwiches are coming in at $10 and entrees as $12-$16."
One thing to note about the tablet is that you cannot surf the Internet on it and they've dimmed the screen. Also, the chef tested all of his meals by eating them in the dark, so they're movie theatre friendly.
