GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin's famous "legitimate rape" line will become part of pop culture.
Thursday's episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC is "ripped from the headlines," as the police procedural show likes to say, and this time it comes from the Missouri Senate race.
In the "Legitimate Rape" episode, a sports reporter accuses her cameraman of rape and then discovers she is pregnant. The promo clip shows an older man testifying at the trial. "It's nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant," the man says.
Akin, then a six-term Missouri congressman, said something similar last summer and it rocked the Senate race. It was a contributing factor to his defeat by Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, and the line is held up by politicos such as Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus as one of the "biologically stupid" things said last year.
McCaskill posted her reaction Wednesday on Twitter: "Now this is surreal," she tweeted.
