ELLISVILLE, Mo. (KSDK) - A bitter political battle we've been covering for months will continue on Tuesday.

The Ellisville City Council started proceedings Monday night to impeach Mayor Adam Paul. They say he has abused and overreached his authority.

Paul and his attorney say the real reason for the impeachment is because he opposed Tax Increment Financing for a Walmart. He went to court last week in an effort to stop impeachment proceedings, but a judge denied his request.

He filed an appeal, and that was denied Monday.

Monday's hearing ran from 6 p.m. to midnight and a council member says the city has only presented about half of its case, so far, against Mayor Adam Paul.

Police officers testified before a packed crowd of Paul supporters that the first-time Mayor asked the chief for a gun and a badge, and gave them orders to remove citizens from city meetings -- something the prosecutor says is outside his power as Mayor.

More charges will be heard Tuesday, but the Mayor maintains they are all baseless.  He believes this impeachment is retribution for his opposition to tax breaks for developers of a new Wal-Mart.

But the woman who filed the original complaint that's lead to Paul's impeachment says this is largely about the Mayor breaking rules that were established to keep Ellisville's Mayor from having too much power.

Arguments are expected to restart at 7 p.m. at Ellisville Elementary School.
