KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - A popular Amtrak route between St. Louis and Kansas City could be in jeopardy.
The Kansas City Star reports the state owes Amtrak some $10-million for operating the route, known as the Missouri River Runner.
Missouri taxpayers are suppose to pay $8.5 million each year to cover the cost of Amtrak, but Missouri has not made all of its payments since 2010 due to the economy.
In October, Amtrak will lose some federal funding it uses to help offset the costs.
Nearly 200,000 people rode the River Runner last year, but ticket sales don't even cover half the expenses. The route runs twice-a-day
