ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Smoking cigarettes may have earned a reputation as a cancer-causing pastime, but there is a new trend among young adults that's taking over.

The problem is some have made the switch to hookah from cigarettes thinking it is a safer option. What they don't know is that theory has gone up in smoke.

Smoking hookah, a water-based tobacco pipe, is no safer than smoking a cigarette.

According to the CDC, an hour-long hookah session produces about 100 to 200 times more smoke-filled air by volume than a single cigarette.

Bottom line is, once you inhale, the lungs are still exposed to harmful toxins, just not technically in the exact same fashion.
It's still addictive and you are even exposed to additional chemicals that are not found in cigarette smoking. Hookah smoke contains different carcinogens than cigarette smoke.

But trading one set of chemicals and additives for the other isn't advisable, especially for children and teens.

Bottom line, smoking with a water pipe merely gives the impression of purifying smoke, showing that the reality of safe smoking is simply a pipe dream.
