CHICAGO (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk says he recently went on a ride-along with Chicago police to see areas plagued by street-gang violence. He even responded to a call where one alleged gang member was shot.
The Illinois Republican spoke about the incident on the city's South Side after meeting law enforcement heads in Chicago on Monday.
Asked about his tour of Auburn-Gresham, Kirk used slang for a shooting and said: "One guy got popped."
Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy, who was with Kirk, said the wounded man was an alleged gang member and he survived.
Earlier this year, Kirk drew criticism by calling for the arrest of up to 18,000 Gangster Disciple members. Congressman Bobby Rush dismissed that as a simplistic solution to a complex problem.
