ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - A 79-year-old St. Louis woman died Wednesday after a fire destroyed the Mehlville home she lived in with family members.
St. Anthony's Medical Center confirmed Georgette Gapsch's death.
According to Officer Rick Eckhard, spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department, firefighters and police were called to the home in the 10000 block of St. Simon Court around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said 13-year-old Mia Gapsch escaped the fire and ran to a neighbor's home for help. She told the neighbors three other family members were still inside her home. Police arrived first at the scene, but could not enter the home due to the heavy smoke. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and pulled the three people out.
Thirty-eight-year-old Terry Gapsch, Georgette's grandson and Mia's father, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital. Mia was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. Maci, Terry's other daughter, remains listed in critical condition.
Family said Terry ran back inside the house to rescue one of his daughters and fell through the staircase.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement. The St. Louis County Police Arson & Explosives Unit is investigating.
