Belleville (KSDK)--Students and staff at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville are mourning the sudden death of a longtime volunteer.
Frank Antoine,80, died early Saturday from injuries he suffered during Friday night's football game against Collinsville High.
Antoine was part of what's called a "chain gang," a crew that uses a chain to measure downs on the field. He fell and hit his head while working Friday's game. He later died at the hospital.
"It visually affected our team last night. It affected our coaches. They know this gentleman. He's not just a guy who shows up and does something and leaves, they talk to him before and after," said Althoff principal David Harris.
Antoine volunteered countless hours at the school.
"He just loved watching kids compete at the high school level. He thought that was pure athletics, it wasn't money induced or anything like that, he just loved to go out and watch the kids compete," Harris said.
The school is planning a memorial for Antoine, details are still being worked out.
