ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Wednesday marks 12 years since the 9/11 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon.

Nearly 3,000 lives were lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Penn., where passengers retook the plane from hijackers and crashed into the ground.

Several tributes are planned across the country, including several here in the St. Louis area.

A tribute to first responders will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 9/11 Memorial in O'Fallon, Mo. The memorial is made of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center and is located outside the police department on North Main Street.

In Fenton, a commemorative ceremony will be held at Heroes Memorial in Fenton City Park. Brooklyn native Sarrea Layton will speak at the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Layton, who moved here in 1981, lost her brother in the attack.
