UNION, Mo. (KSDK) - A Union, Mo. mother has gotten the attention of national media outlets after a photo of a note she wrote to her son went viral.

On August 29, Zach Gibson decided to write a Facebook post announcing he's bisexual. He says it was an impulse decision because his friend was pressuring him to "get it over with."

His mother, Michelle McClain, was sleeping at the time, but saw the post when she woke up in the morning.

She says she was emotional when she read his post. Not because she was upset, but because she was so proud. In response, she decided to leave him a heartwarming note.

"Before I left for work, just on impulse, I grabbed a pen and paper and decided to write him a note because I wanted him to have something that he can take out and he can look at if he was ever feeling low, and see, you know, how much I care about him," said Michelle.

The note said in part, "I love you unconditionally. I love you with my actions, not just words. I'm so proud of you. You are the bravest person I know."

Zach, who has struggled with depression and attempted to commit suicide earlier this year, first came out to one his friends in May.

"Before I came out I was hiding it. By the time I came out I didn't even know why I was hiding it anymore because I knew I'd have support from friends and family," said Zach. "Once I came out, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders."

Michelle took a photo of the note and posted it on Facebook because she says family and friends have been Zach's biggest supporters. Her brother encouraged her to post it on the Facebook page "Have a Gay Day." The NoH8 campaign saw the image, picked it up, and the story started to go viral.

Since Aug. 30, the note has been published on Buzzfeed, Yahoo!, The Huffington Post, The Daily Mail, and even People.com.

"It's just been really amazing to see all the support, everywhere, from all over the world," said Zach.
