EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - The former chief of the Edwardsville Police Department was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in prison after admitting to stealing nearly $140,000 in city funds.
James Bedell had faced up to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of embezzlement in April 2013.
Prosecutors said Bedell, who served in the department since 2007, embezzled the funds between 2009 and 2012. He resigned in fall 2012 when federal agents raided his home and office.
On top of the prison term, Bedell will have to repay the money he stole.
