EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A rifle round in a locker room has leaders at Edwardsville High School asking questions.
Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven said it appears to be a harmless mistake, but his department is taking the matter seriously.
A student reportedly found the live bullet in the boys' locker room.
That student immediately alerted school administrators, who then called police. Officers conducted a thorough search of the area to see if there was a weapon nearby. They did not find one.
Chief Keeven believes the bullet was probably intended for hunting or target shooting. It is a round for a rifle - not a handgun.
Authorities said the student likely did not mean to bring it to school or to drop it.
School officials are still working to identify who the bullet belongs; then they'll decide whether any punishment is necessary.
