BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - Break out your wooden chili-tasting spoons, folks. This weekend marks the 30th annual Belleville Chili Cook-Off.
More than 50,000 people are expected in downtown Belleville this Friday and Saturday to sample chili recipes from individuals, local organizations and businesses.
The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce is hosting the cook-off. The festival runs between the first block of West Main Street, around the Public Square and down the first three blocks of East Main Street.
Chili judging will take place Saturday morning at 11 a.m. on the main stage. More than 50 chili recipes have been entered. Chili vendors will compete in a "Non Food Service Business/Organizationo" division or "Restaurant/Caterer" division. First, second and third prize ribbons will be awarded in each divison. Cash prizes ranging from $100 to $300 will be presented to the chili cook-off winners at 5 p.m.
Festival-goers can participate in a People's Choice Award at the chili cook-off as well. Each chili vendor will have a bucket at their booth to accept "votes" on their behalf. Each vote will cost $1. The vendor who raises the most money will be declared the winner. All of the doanted money will be given to the Community Interfaith Food Pantry.
