ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The second American to orbit the earth and one of the last surviving original Mercury 7 astronauts has died. Scott Carpenter was 88-years-old.
We have video from the KSDK archives of Carpenter's visit to McDonnell Douglas back in the '60s. He paved the way to space for other astronauts, including Belleville native Sandra Magnus, who was in town speaking at Boeing Thursday night.
"The path I was able to walk I was able to do because of the contributions of those great men and it's really sad to see another one pass," said Magnus.
Of the original Mercury 7, only John Glenn survives at the age of 92.
