ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Charges have been dropped against a St. Louis mother accused of beating, strangling, and tossing her son into a dumpster.
Melissa Shawneece Jackson was charged with first-degree murder and felony abuse of a child resulting in death after her 18-month-old son, Marquell Jackson, died May 25, 2011.
An autopsy revealed Marquell had suffered at least three separate fatal injuries while in the care of his mother, including brain trauma, multiple bone fractures, a lacerated liver, ligature marks on his neck, and internal bleeding. His body was found in a dumpster in the alley behind Jackson's home in the 2300 block of Jefferson after relatives reported him missing.
Jackson pleaded not guilty to the charges in 2011.
Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce confirms the charges have been dropped, but would not comment on why.
