BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Ward 5 Alderman Mark Eckert is Belleville's new mayor, after being appointed by outgoing Mayor Mark Kern.
Eckert was named Monday during a City Council meeting. He's scheduled to take over on December 20th as head of the suburban St. Louis city.
Kern also appointed Johnnie Anthony as the first black alderman in the city's 190-year history. Both recommendations were approved unanimously by the 16 aldermen.
Kern is leaving to become St. Clair County Board chairman. He won the position in the November 2 election.
Eckert said he plans to run for re-election when Kern's term is up in April.
