Highland, IL (KSDK) - The mission for a Highland, Illinois church was to raise money for a youth center. Not that unusual, except this center is to be built half way around the world.

Father Paul Kala with St. Paul's Catholic Church was born and raised in Ghana. Following a visit to the country in 2010, Father Kala prayed before coming up with a plan to help kids in Ghana.

His goal was to raise money for a youth center where kids could be fed spiritually and physically along with being given hope.

The mission was an easy sell to church members determined to help children they didn't even know, thousands of miles away. Within a matter of months, people across Illinois helped St. Paul's Church raise more than $300,000.

"When we started soliciting fund and all it was so surprising to see how the donations came in just little would you expect from some people, but the money came in," said Father Kala.

Construction on the youth center has started and Father Kala said the work is being done by locals, by hand. There are still several ways you can help with Father Kala's mission.
