Alton, IL (KSDK) - An Alton, Illinois man has been charged with failure to report an accident involving death after driving through a police checkpoint early Sunday morning and crashing his car, killing his passenger.
Kenneth Jewan Jones has been charged after he knowingly left the scene of the accident which killed Kimala Harrison early Sunday morning.
Alton police say officers pulled over the vehicle Jones was driving at a seatbelt checkpoint at Elm and Alby because Harrison was not wearing a seatbelt. As officers prepared to write the citation, they also asked for Jones' driver's license because they suspected he had been drinking.
Police say Jones then sped off, driving south on Alby, and hit two cars parked in a driveway about one mile away.
Harrison was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Authorities are still awaiting toxicology results.
Jones' bond is set at $75,000.
